On HAIDA GWAII

QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS

I am a twenty nine year old born and raised islander with generations of local knowledge to offer. Both my work and my passion for the outdoors have taken me from one end of these islands to the other. From ocean to mountain if there is somewhere you want to go or something you want to see I can probably get you there.

Bear encounters

Haida Gwaii is home to a large population of some of the worlds largest black bears. After nine years of guiding people to within a stones throw of wild bears I consider this to be one of the top experiences that I can share with you. Watch bears from a comfortable distance or get as close as your courage will allow. Hike grassy hillsides or beach estuaries in the summer (May August) or creep along worn bear trails through old growth forests along salmon streams in the fall (Sept.-Nov.) Witnessing bears fishing the annual salmon runs at eye level is an exciting experience.

May-November

$250 per person per day

Mountain Alpine Hikes Day/Overnight

If you are an adventurer at heart and have an interest in remote places this is about as far from civilization as you can get. After a short steep accent you will bring out of the tree line into an isolated area of rolling green hills and wild flowers. It will feel as though you are in a different world. The views of the west coast and the stars at night make the hike worth while. The mountains are abundant in wildlife in a natural and relaxed state due to the lack of human presence. Many of the mountain tops are littered with compressed rocks of interesting shapes and colours. The alpine is one of my favorite places. All necessary camping gear is supplied for overnight back pack trips. Good physical condition is required.

June-Sept.

$300 per person per day

Naikoon Park Beach Hikes

You have the option of a do it yourself trip or an accompanied trip. If you choose to do it your self I will supply all necessary gear and information. It is a three day hike along uninhabited sand beaches where the soothing sounds of the ocean make a peaceful relaxing environment. You will be dropped off and then hike to a pick up destination. If you have a close friend(s) that you want to spend some quality time with than this hike is ideal. It is an easy and safe do it yourself trip.

Year round

$100 per person per day unaccompanied

$400 extra per trip accompanied

Old Growth Forest Hikes

Get off the groomed trails and get into the real Haida Gwaii bush. Hike along ancient creek bottoms filled with huge old growth trees in excess of five hundred years old.. These two hundred foot tall giants are part of a thriving rain forest eco system that is free of human influence. A day hike will take you through several different types of old growth forest. If you really want to delve into the bush then an overnight venture is also an option. Again all gear is supplied.

Year round

$150 per person per day

$250 per person overnight

Crab Fishing

A fun and easy way for all experience levels to harvest dungeness crabs. During the summer months these large delicious crabs migrate into the shallow sand beaches where they can be caught by sharp eyed fisherman wading in the surf. All fishing gear is supplied. A saltwater fishing license is required which allows you a generous limit of six crabs.

June-July

$100 per person per day

plus saltwater license

Shark Fishing

Take a short cruise out of the Queen Charlotte Harbour to fish for Spiny dog sharks inside the protected waters of the inlet. These ten to twenty pound predatory sharks migrate into the inlet by the thousands providing non stop action. This is a fishery suited to all experience levels of fisherman. It is an ideal alternative for people with reservations about traveling on a long boat ride to fish the rough waters of the west coast. Travel aboard a large comfortable boat with all fishing gear supplied. A saltwater fishing license is required.

June 20-Sept.

$150 per person per trip

$75 per child (under 12)

plus saltwater license

Trout fishing

Spend an afternoon enticing hungry trout out of natural little streams or ponds in quiet out of the way places that are rarely or never fished. You will never have to fish in sight of another human being. Or fish in large open estuaries where one of our many rivers meets the sea. These estuaries are alive with wild salmon fry which in turn draws large numbers of trout to feed on them. Another option is to troll in a small boat in one of our lakes surrounded by dense forest for large trout. Trout fishing is a great way to pass the day for any experience level including kids. Fishing gear supplied if needed.

Year round

$150 per person per trip

$75 per child (under 12)

plus license

Do it yourself fisherman

For those of you who have come to fish and have brought your own boats I offer a days advice on ocean fishing. I will accompany you for one day aboard your boat. I can recommend the right gear for either salmon or bottom fish, demonstrate local techniques, and recommend good fishing areas. I can also properly clean and process the days catch. I have grown up fishing these waters and have spent years aboard commercial fishing vessels for both salmon and halibut.

$350 per day

Various Interests

Some other areas of interest are bald eagle viewing, whale watching, rock collecting, fossil hunting, berry picking, and photography. Also if you have an interest in something not listed please ask and I will be glad to accommodate you or point you in the direction of someone that will. I can develop individual trips around your interests.

I focus on taking small groups of two to five people to ensure a quality personal experience but larger groups may be accommodated. Drinks and snacks are supplied. So lets get out of the box and off the beaten path and see the real Haida Gwaii!!!
